Exam Fever Cured

The IGCSE exams from 7 May to 12 June made our campus’ atmosphere a bit more serious as students wanted to create a conducive environment for attendees of exam especially private candidates those came all the way from different parts of Kuala Lumpur.  The availability of hotels in the serene hilltop of Genting Highlands and the most suitable exam atmosphere prevailed in our school attract many private candidates to choose HIBS as their exam center.

This year the home visit in the month of  June was seemed challenging for our students as it culminated in PKS2 ( Second School Progress Assessment ). Students were found burning midnight oil for the last fortnight in order to cure their exam fever! The whole campus was seemed to be in the serious mood of exam from 4 June to 11 June when it coupled with IGCSE exams.

Hedgehogs and Pigeon on Campus!

by Chew Been Hui

Ng Sher Zhang of Form 5 Science is a lover of strange pets and he states that animals are friends for him. He loves his pets as much as he does to his family members! He keeps different types of pets at home. A few of them are Hedgehogs, Hamster, crab, Rabbit, Pigeon, Fish, and Dog etc. among which the pigeon, dog, rabbit and hedgehog are so close to him as he is the trainer, master, care taker and everything for them since they are very young.

Ng Sher Zhang started hobby of keeping pets at the age of 10 with the help and support of parents. Parents gave him the instructions on keeping pets and they let him not be cruel to any animal. The saddest experience in keeping pet is indeed when they die. The most favourite pet for him is his pigeon. He calls his pigeon  ‘Xiam Min’ and takes along with him where ever he goes, even to the school boarding. It was a strange experience for all students when he brought his Hedgehog and pigeon to school!

As his hobbies are spending time with pets and taking photos of plants, animal and insects, he is always seen with a camera hanging from his shoulders, roaming around the campus. Although he loves others caring his pets he gets angry when others touch them unnecessarily, especially without his permission, because he believes that the animals don’t like being touched by man always.

Loving Animals

Collected by Chew Been Hui

Jacky Chan, a year 11 student, our enigmatic genius of Highlands International Boarding School is very interested in pet keeping. He had managed to get a pair of rabbits from one of our school’s supporting staff, A Pek, five years ago. He started communicating with them in their own language!! Every evening, he takes them to feed them and fondle. Indeed he loves those pets than anyone else on the campus while others running behind ‘someone special’ to catch their love in futile!

Other than rabbits, he also likes other pets too! The main reason that he likes to spend time with his rabbits in school is because he can release tension and relax after a long day’s study hours. We never see him involving in any other games or sports. He told ‘the High Times’ that his parents also knew that he is having pets in school and they love it. His friends unanimously state that he cares his rabbits very much. He seldom talks to anybody around him even his classmate. Anyhow, he’s always kind, friendly and cheerful to everyone.

Although the death of a few rabbits in past made him so unhappy he continue his friendship with them with more intimacy. His gloom and glad in the school depends the mood of his rabbits!  Even though he loves pets, he is also a very cool person.

Chance for All; Mr. Vijesh

Interview by Fatima

Perhaps this is the first time our school ventures an inter house soccer match, which was proved to be a grand tournament enjoyed by students as well as staff. Although its spirit came out from Mr. Vijesh, our English teacher and Mr. Sujin, IT administrator, all students and staff members made it a grand success.
In an interview to High Times Mr. Vijesh says ” I felt there are some good players apart from F.U.F.A have no chance to go to MSSD or other competitions. So I wanted to show others that we had several very good players like Poovan, Nazrul, Simon etc. Malaysia is now paying a lot of importance to football, so I wanted to give our students a chance to show themselves. If students who can’t expose themselves they won’t show their talents, they will be more aggressive. So if they get chances, they will be calmer knowing they can show their talents, they will be less problematic”
He added that the tournament committee wanted to make students play with passion, for competing each other and the following year a plan holding all sports games tournaments because our students are really interested in games like football.

The whole hearted support of Mr. Hisham was really a great boon to make this event success.  Mr. Vijesh thanked everyone and requested all students to take part this sort of events in future

A big salute to teachers

16 May: The teacher’s day at Highlands International School was celebrated with all its spirit. The day started with formal part which came with Mr. Chee’s opening speech. He appreciated the students for holding such a grand programme to show their affection to the teachers. He reminded the teachers to be always the best being motivators.

The Program was led by Amanda and Dharrisan, our MC duet. Students and teachers gathered at MPH to be part of event and had a few performances such as short sketch on teachers and a staff choir was followed. During that time students of year 10 and form 4 distributed small but very sweet presents to teachers as a token of their love.
